Beach + Textures

6/27/2014

Hello again families!

What a wonderful week we had continuing to explore the beach and the textures that we find while at the beach. I've loved watching the kids getting so excited about the textures of the shells and listening to the ocean. They've thoroughly enjoyed this topic.

On Monday we created sand castles on the playground. We practiced scooping wet sand into the buckets and packing the sand with shovels. Then we dumped them over and created different shapes! In the afternoon Mr. Nick came out and he created a sand castle kingdom with a mote and they all loved it; especially destroying it at the end!

On Tuesday we created sand art. We dipped our sponges into glue, wiped the glue on the paper and then practiced sprinkling the sand onto the glue. I was impressed by how they were all able to do each step on their own.

On Wednesday we got out the sea shells and explored them further. I love how they all sit patiently and are very gentle when it's time to get them out.

Thursday was our Bubble Party! Toni came out and gave a demonstration on how we're making the bubbles and step by step instructions on how we make the special bubble recipe. The Sprouts gave a thumbs up or thumbs down on which bubble recipe worked or didn't work. It was a total success.

On Friday we had our Splash Day!  We also went camping and set up tents. We will be making vegan s'mores as well! Very exciting week here at Green Sprout.

Things We Bring to the Beach

Good Afternoon Families!

We had a week full of fun continuing our beach theme by talking about items that we bring to the beach. We also were talking about different forms of transportation that we use to go on vacations with our families and friends. We had quite a few friends bring in items to enhance our learning and we definitely always appreciate that! Our pre-tots loved the conch shell that Luke brought. During circle time we passed it around and listened to the ocean. They really seemed to enjoy this activity. We also practiced using our gentle hands for when we looked at delicate sand dollars.  We've been singing our beloved Daddy Shark song and have been reading our beach/ocean theme books.

On Monday we made beach balls out of paper plates and used markers to decorate them.

On Tuesday we got red, silver, blue metal pails and decorated them with all sorts of stickers. Some beach themed and others were summer based stickers with lolly pops, ice cream cones and cherries. Then some of our tots went around and collected different items from around the playground and had a lot of fun with it.

On Wednesday we used water colors outside and painted various beach items and forms of transportation (umbrellas, towels, sandcastles, boats, cars, trains). We also decorated a giant cardboard box with glue and construction paper to create a car to play in.

On Thursday we colored some more outside on the picnic table and had a super fun time splashing around in the water (and mud)!

On Friday we used our recyclable items turned boats and tested them to see if they would sink or float in our pools. We had another successful splash day!

Next week we will be learning about different textures found at the beach. If you'd like to bring anything in, we always appreciate it!

Have a lovely weekend, families!

Love,

Jackie S.

Sea Animals Cont. + Land/Air Animals

Hello Pre-Tot Families! And happy Father's Day weekend to you all.

This week we did things a little different. We noticed how much our pre-tots were interested in sea creatures that we decided to continue our lesson on the subject. We also mixed in a few activities with land/air animals.

On Monday we did something we haven't done in a while- practiced using stamps! We had all different land/air/sea animal stamps that were fun to play with. We also got to color in the morning on the picnic table which is always a popular activity.

On Tuesday we made our Father's Day fish craft. We painted each pre-tot's hand with orange paint to create a fish hand stamp and then used their fingers to create sea weed. The end product had the fish hooked to the pole and read "I'm hooked on daddy" :). The pre-tots always like to get their hands nice and messy so they enjoyed this project.

On Wednesday during circle time we watched a video and listened to some seagulls. We also got to look at some seagulls in one of our circle time books. We passed around some cool seashells that we brought from home and we put them to our ears to listen to the ocean. THe pre-tots were very gentle and took care of our shells. We've noticed that our pre-tots have been more engaged during our circle time and enjoy participating.

On Thursday and Friday we had our special Splash Day! These have been fun for the pre-tots and again they seem more interested in the fun mud puddles than the hose/sprinkler/contraption :)

This week we continued to sing our beloved shark song. We also read more books that our friends brought from home. We read "The Seaside Cat", a Nemo counting book (Finn particularly loved this one), and "Sea Creatures".

Love,

Jackie S.

Sea Animals

Good Afternoon Families!

This week in the Tulip class was all about sea animals, a topic I love to explore! We sang the shark song (Mama shark do do do do do do) which is a popular one. And we had a variety of fun sea animal books including, "Rainbow Sea" and "Mr. Sea Horse", that our friends brought in to share with us (thank you!). During circle time we got to look at some sea shells from the beach which the kids really seemed interested in. We've also noticed that a lot of our friends are using their words more often times then not and also following our routine during transitions without being helped. It is truly awesome to see!

On Monday we got to make ocean sensory bags. We made these bags using oil, blue and white paint, and also some glitter. Squishy, fun time! We also used the bags again during circle time.

On Tuesday we made oysters with paper plates and a cotton ball as our pearl. The kids got to decorate the plate and paste the pearl. Also, for yoga with Vanessa, our pose of the week was Surfer Pose (Warrior II), which was perfect to go along with our theme. So as Vanessa stood in the pose, we pretended to be little sharks and swim under her legs.

On Wednesday we created jellyfish out of paper towel rolls. The kids got to paint (which appears to be a class favorite) the toilet paper rolls and then we let them dry over night so we could finish them on Thursday when we stuck googly eyes and cut out the tentacles. They kind of turned into a cross breed of jelly fish and squid, but still turned out cute!

On Thursday we had the kick off of our Splash Day! Our kids loved it! We had a PVC pipe that had holes in it and was hung in the air and 3 baby pools filled with water and also the sensory tubs. Their favorite part of course was the large puddle of mud that the hose created. They were all giggling and running through it and splashing, it was really fun to see.

On Friday we had another successful Splash Day and yet again a ton of fun at our morning dance party.

Next week we will be continuing our June Beach theme by focusing on Land and Air Animals!

Love,

Jackie S.
