Fire safety Tuesday

11/13/2012

Today we only had five kiddos (Olive, Sophie, Ancel, Noah, and Clara.) We started off our day in the cold weather on the playground, which didn’t seem to bother anybody. We had apples for snack and talked about the calendar and the cloudy weather. After snack we had circle time in which we discussed sheep and sang Old MacDonald had a Sheep a few times. We looked at pictures of sheep and read a fun pop-up book that had sheep and other animals in it. Then our monkey puppet gave everybody hugs and kisses and talked about different body parts, like feet, head, nose, tummy, etc. and gave the sprouts few kisses on each. We discussed the plan for the day, including cotton ball art and a fire drill.

When we went out to the playground we brought the smoke alarm with us and let each sprout push the button on it to hear the loud beep. Then we told them that when they hear the beep they are to head to the gate because there would be a fire. They were very interested in pushing the button, no matter how loud it was. The alarming beep didn’t scare anybody! When it was time to do the fire drill all of our little people (along with the toddlers and primary classes) filed out the gate holding hands to the parking lot, where we sat down and sang the Wheels on the Bus and talked about fire safety.

When the drill was over we went back to the playground. Noah played with the mulch and Olive, Clara, Ancel, and Sophie hung out in the sand box. Later on Sophie and Ancel hung out together on the upside-down sensory table. Olive explored the top of the playscape, Clara went up and down the stairs, and Noah played with a green truck.

After playing outside we went in for lunch and allowed the sprouts to practice washing their hands on their own. The two who had food that required spoons practiced feeding themselves their yogurt/hummus and had a blast doing so. Everybody slept well during nap time and afterwards we plan to glue cotton balls onto cardstock paper, a combined art and sensory experience. We’ll also hang out in the newly updated room and spend some time outside later. So far it’s been a very fun and safe day!
