Making our own didgeridoos (1-30)

1/31/2013

Miss Arielle spent the day in the Shining Star room today!  We are all so excited she will  be in our room permanently started on Monday!
This morning to warm up our bodies Miss Lizzie made a new game up.  We all ran around the playground outside acting as if we were different animals. As we ran the perimeter of the playground each kiddo picked what animal they wanted to act like.  This game definitely got us all warmed up and ready to start another fabulous day.
During circle time we continued our discussion about Australia.  We focused on the people who live in the desert in Australia called the Aborigines. Miss Lizzie introduced a new musical instrument called the didgeridoo, and explained that the Aborigines play this musical instrument using circulatory breathing.  We all listened to the sound it makes and then gathered at the table to make our own didgeridoos!
As the kiddos were painting their  we looked at pictures of the Outback in Australia.  The class decided that our next field trip should be to Australia! :)
This afternoon unfortunately we did not have Spanish but we had another special visitor.  Miss Lizzie's best friend and roommate came to hangout with us this afternoon.  The Shining Star's absolutely loved meeting her and telling her all about the fun they have at Green Sprout!  Because Mrs. Leona was not here we took this time to go out on the deck to play our new musical instruments!  We gathered in a circle and blew into our didgeridoos making the sounds we heard earlier.  We had so much leaning about the Aborigines and acting as if we were in the Outback In Australia!

Introducing Australia

This week, continuing our unit of 'Global Awareness' we are focusing on Australia.  This morning during circle time Miss Lizzie introduced to the Shining Stars the continent of Australia.  We located Australia on the globe and discovered it is an island.  We discussed that an island is a piece of land surrounded by water.  We also discussed that most of Australia is a desert and because it is on the opposite side of the world the seasons are different from ours.  The kiddos were very intrigued by the fact that when Australians celebrate the winter holidays it is summer!  We chatted about all the different animals that live in Australia.  Miss Lizzie introduced the word marsupial and explained the different animals that are considered marsupials.  We then decided we wanted to write a story about the kangaroos living in Australia.  The story turned out hilarious!
After our long discussion about Australia we took the time to play in centers.  During centers Mr. Nick had a special project for the Shining Stars to do, we made a mobile for the baby room!  We decorated stars with shiny jewels and sparkles on stars.  Each one turned out so different and beautiful the babies are gonna absolutely love it!
This afternoon we had yoga, all the kiddos were very ready to stretch their bodies after a long nap! Miss Abby led us in some stretches to wake our muscles up and we passed around our "breathe ball" to stretch out our lungs.
We have had such a fabulous day here in the Shining Star room and can't wait for tomorrow to continue the fun!

This Monday was a very good drop off. Everyone was excited to be back in the sandbox digging with the shovels and moving sand with the dump trucks.
We went inside for snack earlier than normal and there was a bit of a shift in restlessness. A few friends were a little more sensitive to things than normal.
During show and tell Toni dropped in for a bit to hang out. Everyone was excited to see her and show her their toys. After a great show and tell everyone headed to either our art center, construction center or library to do some independent exploration.
Little dragon came out for a bit to stretch her legs. All the boys plus Paige wanted to hold her but only Nick and Lizzie are allowed to.
After dax finished one of our small puzzles he wanted to try the big one. Soon all the boys wanted to help.
We followed our normal routine for lunch and nap.
Then we woke up and had a quick snack to feed our bodies right before yoga.
Abby does a great job holding everyone's attention during the thirty minute yoga sessions. She incorporates games and stories along with yoga.
The end of yoga marks our outside pick up time and the free play of the backyard.

Happy Friday! We have had an absolutely fabulous Friday here at Green Sprout! How can we not with weather like this?  We spent the entire morning outside, we just couldn't resist this amazing weather we are blessed to be having right now.
We spent our time outside this morning playing soccer, having a dance party, playing chase, helping Mr. Nick spread more new sand in the sand box, and watching our new friend Grace finish painting the door! It is beautiful!  The Shining Stars absolutely love the pre tots and spent a lot of time dancing with them, laughing and singing!
We came in for lunch and had a surprise visitor, Colette's dad came by to say hello and share many laughs with us! What a great surprise!
This afternoon after a long nap we were more than ready for music with Mrs. Jackie.  We enjoyed music outside on the deck, the kiddos loved singing and dancing in the sun to the tunes of Mrs. Jackie's guitar!
We then headed to the backyard to wrap up a fabulous week here at the Sprout!
See you Monday :)

Much love,
Miss Lizzie and Mr. Nick

We had a special guest today. His name is Hank, and he is a three year old who dropped in for a play date. After drop off he met us inside for snack.
During circle time we talked about MLK and why we have a day dedicated to him. After circle time we jumped right into art where we drew pictures of dream clouds to celebrate MLKs dream. Everyone wanted to play some music like we did yesterday during our art project, so we played Colette's favorite new band, Cheese.
Once everyone had cleaned their paintbrushes and put their smocks away we open up the room to centers which we haven't done in a few days. Our new friend Hank went strait for the cars like our buddies Rhys and Joey always do first.
Once our inside time was over we went out back and everyone helped nick organize the backyard with hooks drilled into the fence where we put our new shovels and rakes.
Nobody wanted to go inside but we needed to have lunch. Following lunch, our transition to nap was a little different than normal. This time everyone sat on their nap mats in the dark and we read a story where they could not see the pictures but had to use their imagination instead. This was a big hit and after the story they seemed satisfied and promptly went to sleep. Upon waking up we had a visit by miss Toni for awhile with one of her babies who needed a change of scenery. Rhys is very good with the babies and is very gentle and intrigued by them. Sometimes if he can't fall asleep right away during nap he will go help in the baby room. We talked with miss Toni for awhile during snack time. We gave the class two options for the remaining 20 minutes, work inside or on the deck. The majority of the class elected to go outside , Jasper however was quite content reading a book on the couch and checking on little dragon every few minutes. Since we spent the majority of the morning inside we thought the deck would be a good idea for just the primary class to run off some steam before joining the rest of the school in the back yard.
Once we got in the back very one bee lined it to the sandbox. The power of new sand has been quite surprising.

Exploring our new backyard

1/24/2013

Happy Wednesday everyone!  Today we spent most of our time outside exploring our new backyard! All the kiddos are really excited to spend the time to make up new games with all the new additions and toys we have.  Tristan, Colette, Leina, Maya and Dax made up a new game to play around the dome.  They were practicing balancing as they walked around the border of the dome!  They all did a fantastic job balancing as they walked across.  Each kiddos was showing so  much encouragement towards each other! Mrs. Jackie brought a book outside to read after we finished snack,"The Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly".  Paige and Colette were very intrigued by the pictures of this book.  When Mrs. Jackie was done reading the book Ivy wanted to read it to Miya.  They sat down and looked at the pages together, coming up with their own story to go along with the pictures.
During lunch we had our circle time.  We discussed why we weren't at school on Monday because of Martin Luther King Day.  We explained we was a civil rights leader who helped the people of our country love one other equally.  We also discussed that Miss Lizzie's birthday was on the same day and that is why she was absent yesterday.
After a long nap we all gathered for snack and then for an afternoon art project because Mrs. Leona was out sick today.  We sat down to paint a Shining Star collage.  We painted as we listened to different types of music.  The String Cheese Incident really made the kiddos express so much joy when listening to the music.
We then made our way outside to enjoy the beautiful weather and our new toys in the sandbox!

Much Love,
Miss Lizzie and Mr Nick

A Focused Breath (1/22)

Today we spent the morning outside filling up our new dome area with mulch. Anything involving a shovel and wheelbarrow immediately grabs our sproutlets attention. Everyone wanted to help fill up the wheelbarrow outside, but the boys are the ones who's interest stayed with it the whole time. Joey and Rhys helped from start all the way to going inside. After snack we talked about different countries and how they have to work together to accomplish things. So we went out on the deck and pretended to be the leader of different countries. Some decided to work together and organize a dinner party, or in the case of Joey and Rhys, build a fort on our sensory table, while others went lone wolf and played by themselves. After ruling different countries we went inside for lunch.
For story time we reread a book maya brought. It is about dinosaurs, so we discussed why we don't see any dinosaurs walking around right now, and what it means to be extinct. Everyone understood the concept for the most part.
Waking up from nap was a bit hectic today. There was a lot going on so it took us a bit of time to settle in for snack. Once everyone was fed it was time for yoga. We had a fantastic yoga class today. They did a few yoga poses and some yoga games and the last thing they did was a relaxation and breathing exercise. It was amazing to watch. Our instructor had everyone lay flat and close there eyes and placed a smooth polished rock on their foreheads so as to concentrate on keeping it still. Jasper did an amazing job and so did everyone else, every child was absolutely peaceful for a few minutes while they focused on their breath.
Coming out of this relaxed state we calmly got shoes on and went outside for our pickup time.

Outside or Bust (1/18)

We started Friday off inside. It was free play for until snack time. Once everyone was satiated with fruit we got smocks on and made a group card for Jackie J's last day. It was a very diverse theme everyone chose. Colette drew a picture of her and her grandpa at the circus and said Jackie would love it. Dax drew airplanes, while Maggie and Leina drew flowers. Once everyone had finished they were free to read a book while everyone else finished up. We washed our hands and went outside to enjoy the weather warming up. Some of our friends like Rhys and Dax helped move new sand into the sandbox. Having brand new sand in the box was a huge attraction. No one wanted to leave the sandbox after that.
We came in and had lunch then nap.
Once everyone woke up we tries to do a giant group collage to hang up in the welcome center but it just was t happening today so we let our friends hangout on the deck for a bit or do work in the classroom. Everyone wanted to play on the deck. We had a few kids want to come in and read a book on the couch, but soon it was time for outside pick up. Everyone was excited to play in the newly refurbished sandbox. Today they just wanted to play outside.

Playing in the Rain Forest (1/17)

1/18/2013

What a beautiful day here at Green Sprout! Everyone was in such high spirits today and very eager to learn laugh and love!  This morning we enjoyed center time while waiting for all of our friends to arrive.  Rhys, Jasper, Miya and dax enjoyed playing with our bear puzzles that have different emotions; they each took turns using the bear puzzle to make each bear have a different emotion. Leina used to her time play our color counting game.  She did a great job organizing all the tiles in order of their numbers and color.   The kiddos then turned their attention to the drum machine to have a dance party! It was so much fun!!

During circle time Miss Lizzie introduced the class to a new continent, South America.  We located South America on the globe, Colette Leina and Maya were quick to notice that we live closer to South America than France.  We then discussed the rain forest and what animals live in the rain forest.  Monkeys were the topic of discussion; we each took turns telling a story to Miss Lizzie as she wrote it down.  Taking turns telling a story really helps the kiddos learn to listen to what others are saying and take that information to build a story with cause and effect.  We wrapped up circle time reading a couple of books Colette brought to school.  One was a book about monkeys and the other was an eye spy book in German.

Everyone then gathered at the table to paint a picture of the rain forest.  The kiddos really used a lot of time to be very precise in their painting. The kiddos used a lot of details to paint what they thought the rain forest looks like.

During our morning outside time we did some work in the garden.  The kiddos helped Dom Dom and Nick plant broccoli and flowers in our garden!  They loved getting their hands dirty and digging holes to put the plants in.

This afternoon everyone had a blast in Spanish!  We were introduced to new songs and loved singing the old ones as loud as we could!  Mrs. Leona then passed out drums for everyone to play while we listened to music.  We said adios to Mrs, Leona and Alma and headed outside to work together in our backyard to make it beautiful!  The kiddos helped shovel new sand in the sandbox and continued to help in the garden.   What a great way to spend this gorgeous afternoon!

See everyone tomorrow!

Love, Lizzie and Nick

Safety First Then Teamwork (1/16)

We started off the day inside instead of having outside drop off. Everyone work diligently in the classroom, Tristan and Joey worked on scissor skills in the art center while Colette "read" a book to Lizzie and Miya on the couch. While nick was cutting paper for a giant collage Lizzie brought out little dragon so everyone could see her. Little dragon like being played with so we try and take her out a few times a week.

After snack we headed outside while our kinderblossom kids went next door with Arielle. Outside Leina, Zoey, Maya and Paige saw a few of our friends slip on the ramp to the playscape and wanted to make it safer. They asked for a little broom to sweep off the sand so it wasn't slick walking up the ramp anymore. This turned into an all out cleaning of the whole playscape. They worked together sharing the broom and helped keep all of our Greensprout friends safe from slipping.

With the end of outdoor exploration, we came inside for lunch. Our story after lunch was provide my Maya and was a big hit with everyone.

We woke up late as usual and had a great Spanish class following snack. We even had a play date with a 3 year old named Hank. Spanish class was a little slow going at first because we couldn't find miss Leona's CDs so we sang all of our songs a cappella. However, once we got a few songs into it we brought out the instruments like drum sticks and bells and everyone was much more enthusiastic. After Spanish we went outside for our pick up time and the end to a good day
