Thursday, our friends were in for a surprise. Following watermelon for snack, our circle time consisted of talking about new materials and exploration centers in our classroom. Among new things we have incorporated are reading the hands on a clock for our daily activities, a thermometer and talking about the temperature every day. After circle time we went on a tour of the room starting in the library and walked throughout the room as a class exploring new activities and how we take care of each center. We talked about how every thing has a home and there is a way to care for Greensprout things. After our tour of the class room, our friends were eager to explore some new work. Leina, Paige and Colette immediately flocked to the writing center were nick went over letter strokes with colette and Paige, and word composition with Leina. We spelled rhyming words like hat, cat, bat, ect. Maya and Caden worked mostly in the construction station making fences and houses with a new set of blocks. The water bottle lava lamps were very popular today, they are filled with mineral oil, water and food colouring which makes a cool effect when you shake it. With a timer of 5 minutes to clean up and checking where the big hand was every minute, we actually took 6 minutes and headed outside. With a little energy worked off we had a rather calm lunch with our friends focused on their lunch and quickly transitioned to story time. After resting their bodies, our friends who can't sleep joined nick at the big table and worked on activities that they felt challenged them. Caden and Leina worked on an activity that helps to strengthen dexterity and coordination. It included tying a bow, snapping buttons, clasping a belt and other types of fasteners. With an hour till our friends wake up Caden continued with the previous activity while Leina wanted to write numbers and practice writing words, her favorite word to spell today was Bumble Bee.
After everyone was awake and finished snack we had show and tell. Colette brought a book Lizzie read for everyone. Alma brought a princess phone that seemed to steal the show. It flipped out and made real phone sounds. With show and tell wrapping up Spanish class started at 3:30. One of the kids favorite songs is the wake up song, everyone gets a bell and sings to a sleeping friend in Spanish, and when they tell them to wake up, they ring their bell. The class did very well singing all the songs they have heard before, so a new song was introduced. It went over pretty well and was a good finale to class. The end of Spanish marked the beginning of out door time, so with potty reminders we put our shoes on and headed outside.
Today was our friend Maureen's last day, so in keeping with our traditional send off, we let Mo choose what she wanted to do today. Coming in from outside drop off, we talked about the food pyramid and healthy foods we can eat to build a strong body. We identified fruits, vegetables, proteins, and grains, with the most interest in fruits and vegetables. Once we talked about the food pyramid Lizzie handed out some sheets with different types of foods such as fish, eggs, dairy, fruits and veggies our friends could identify and colour. For a surprise right before our outside activities we had a school wide fire drill. An alarm went off and our friends counted off in line and grabbed the shoulders of the friends in front of them and we headed outside. We had another roll call on e outside and talked about the importance of fire safety. After our fire drill we talked about severe weather and dangerous things like tornadoes and hurricanes. The wizard of oz came up a few times in response to tornadoes, and some friends even wanted to be in a tornado. Maya and colette pretended to be firefighters and rescuing everyone in the playscspe from fire. Our lunch time conversation mainly consisted of what was in our lunches and identifying where each food goes in the pyramid. Everyone ate their lung very quickly so we had a little extra time before nap, so all our friends piled on the couch and nick read three stories too them. Everyone sat for all three stories which doesn't happen often. Following nap and snack Mo offered swirl Popsicles she brought for the whole class, and we talked about sugar is only ok for your body sometimes. Following the lovely treat Mo brought for the class she wanted to do dramatic play with all her friends. So we brought out all of our computer keyboards, headphones, costumes, and other thing our friends love to play with. We all gave Mo lots of love before we went outside for outdoor exploration and the end of our day.
Today started off with our friends teaching nick how to hoola hoop. Leina kept it going the longest, almost 10 seconds. We also had a surprise visitor, Teddy, Toni's 7 pound terrier. The kids tried their best but couldn't catch him. After about ten minutes of this it was time to head inside and begin our day. The friends who werent here on Tuesday made sock puppets with Nick, and our friends who already had one made went with Lizzie and decorated the first letter of their names with beans and other crafting materials. Some friends wanted to perfect their puppet skills and made another one, then everyone headed over to the writing center to decorate their letter. Sock puppets and letters actually took longer than we thought and we used all the time we had for inside activities. With a quick game of Simon says to help clean up we headed outside. Today all our friends wanted nick to play hide and seek, which actually turned into chase nick for 20 minutes. On the very last round he hid near the entrance to the pre tots room just to get a break. With nick crippled everyone headed inside for lunch and then nap. One of the duties our friends have is picking the nap story, this week Paige has that responsibility. Once Lizzie finished reading the story, feeling unsatisfied, Paige chose another. Our friends who don't sleep or woke up early practices worksheets until all our friends had woken up. Following snack we had a great Spanish lesson, we started with their favorite song, the wakeup song. They get to sing quietly and use bells to wake their friends who are pretending to be asleep. Spanish is fun because we use a lot of interactive material to keep everyone engaged. Our friends who's attention wanders quickly can easily sit through songs in which we use drumsticks or maracas to keep the beat. After our official Spanish time had ended, we coloured Spanish worksheets, once finished or bored with those our friends were free to find an independent interest in the room until our outside pickup time. Caden, Paige, and Rhys's main focus where the blocks which have had fallen out of popularity until today. With a rather quick cleanup we headed outside to conclude our day |
