Fire Drills and Tuna Fish!

Happy Monday at the Sprout

We started out our day going outside into the breezy weather, we only had a few friends, which is very unusual for a Monday, but we took full advantage and began to explore and water the garden. Some of our primary friends pointed out that there were “orange tomatoes” which meant they were ready to be eaten! Jasper, Annabelle, and Teo all had a chance to pull the tomato of their choice and taste it! Yum!  Once all of our friends arrived, we made our way inside for AM snack, stopping by the Pre-Tot to give a loud HELLO! When we got into our room, some of our friends remembered that before and after snack we sit and wait patiently to wash our hands, other friends wanted to explore just for a second before taking a seat and waiting. During our snack, we talked to our friends about Fire Drills and Fire Alarms! Once snack was done we made our way to the carpet, and read a book that had fires in it! Wren, Ben, and Theo were able to identify the fire trucks we have in our building section! Dom put the alarm on her phone, and as it went off, explained that when we hear the “beep, beep, beep” at Green Sprout we are experiencing a Fire Drill! We explained that when that happens, usually there is a fire somewhere and that we have to evacuate the building for our safety!

We then made our way outdoors for some exploration time.  Before we knew it, the alarm rang and it was time to line up by the gate outside! Many of our friends have experience holding hands, and these skills were put to use as we march, march, marched to the front. While we were out there, we counted ourselves loudly to make sure we were all present! Wren, Alanna, Jasper, Paislie, and Koichi were very interested in the babies in the pack and play. So, as a class we observed the babies and talked about gentle touches with them.  Soon it was time to head in for lunch, potties, and nap!

As we awoke, friends sat on potties and then began exploring the room. What we’ve found, is that it takes a little while for everyone to figure out what they want to focus on, but once they do, the really get serious about their work and play! Eventually Paislie, Ivy, and Ben found their place playing with playdough. Teo and Wren took a lot of time exploring the counting bears (along with 3 of our pre-tots who spent time with us before and after nap! They love those counting bears!) Alanna was busy dragging large carpet tiles around the room, while Annabelle was chilling out on her nap mat playing peekaboo with Piggy.  Jasper and Koichi were taking turns playing with the classroom strobe light. We did a cleanup, had snack, and then had an awesome dance party (always a request from Wren and Ivy).

We got to the big back yard early, and soon wanted a change of scenery. We ventured once again through the pre-tot room, and finally got to the deck, where started water play. Koichi, Ben, Jasper, and Ivy went straight for it. Later, we brought Tuna Fish,, our Beta, out for lunch (to feed him, not to eat him!). Paislie, Teo, Ben, and Alanna were very interested in picking up the smallest speck of a pellet to feed him, and then watching him chomp down. Finally, everyone had a chance to ride on small cars and bikes out on the deck. We made our way to the big back yard to finish up our day!

Glad to hear we have such safety conscious kids...looks like they are fire drill pros. That picture of Alanna hugging Wren should go in a frame...an "awww" moment for sure! Looks like Teo has a pre-tot friend we haven't met, what a cutie. Thanks for another wonderful post, you are awesome!

Hmmm, I was hoping Ivy would be one of the toddlers interested in the babies. Maybe next time. What a fun day, great job to all on a successful fire drill. I love the photo of the water play, they all look so focused! It's interesting that they spend a lot of time exploring their options before selecting their activity - and it seems like they end up pairing up in twos or threes. Fascinating to read about it all, thank you for this!

Awesome Monday! When we got home yesterday, Alanna heard the neighbor's car alarm, she then proceeded to hold my hand and march towards the front door. I didn't really understand what was going on at the time, but after reading the blog, it makes sense now. Good job on the successful fire drill and putting safety first :)
