Primary Sunflowers
Guide to Student Ratio, 1:8
Maximum of 16 students in a classroom
One of the unique qualities of Green Sprout Preschool is our collaboration of Montessori and Reggio Emilia philosophies in the foundation of our primary preschool program. As passionate followers of both learning styles, our teachers believe that children benefit drastically from the combination of the Montessori approach, which is very student-centered, and the Reggio Emilia approach, which emphasizes the importance of community and project-based learning. At this point in a child's development, our teachers believe that it is important to offer each student personal control in the direction of his or her daily exploration of activities. The Montessori approach develops curiosity and excitement in understanding new concepts and fosters a genuine love of learning that is student-directed. The Montessori program is divided into five areas that are exemplified in the stations we have organized throughout our classroom. These five areas include: language, math, practical life, sensorial, and cultural.
Over the course of about a month, our entire class undertakes an in-depth investigation of a topic we feel is worth learning more about. Projects begin with teachers observing and asking questions about the topic of interest. After generating a sufficient amount of interest and uncertainty in our children, teachers introduce materials, follow-up questions, activities, and interactive experiences to provoke creative thinking and problem-solving to further explore the topic. The Reggio Emilia project approach to our program provides a great learning opportunity for children. Through this experience, students learn the values of commitment, self-discovery, group work, and in-depth research.
